Sorry for the late reply, had to think about this a little because out of the original series/AOS bridge crew Chekov and Scotty are the ones I haven't read or thought as much about.

His enthusiasm and energy, especially in Star Trek XI

Tendency for writers (official and fic) to use stereotypes around his nationality. And maybe that he gets to be a genius young person as a white boy when other characters don't...
